STYLISTICS

As Hector is a local hero there has been interviews and pieces on him already. What will make my documentary different to all these other pieces? First of all, I will get an exclusive look into his family archive, pictures, videos and locations, something that I believe has not been done before. Another thing that will be different is linking Hector’s story with a bigger issue that is happening in society today and linking it back to history. Many of the interviews have only focused on one aspect of his life but I wish to create a full picture on his life, A biography! I will achieve this by creating questions that are personal to him. I have already had a meeting with him where he explained a few things that I could not find through my research. He lived through the riots, and before his own eyes he has seen how Handsworth has changed. This is something that I want to show in my documentary.

In terms of stylistic elements, I draw inspiration from a documentary called “Marley” by Kevin Macdonald. I watched this documentary in my second year at university and came back to it this year. The whole film inspired me from the visuals to the story. Marley shares some of the themes and issues that I want to explore in my documentary. This has been my biggest influence in terms of stylistic elements.

The use of a mixture of archive footage and observational footage plays a big factor in the Marley documentary. The visuals of this documentary are simple yet very powerful. The documentary is different because It has a light-hearted feel to it even though it does deal with serious issues, the director has tried not to make it too serious which I thought was great and wish to take this further into my documentary. My documentary will deal with serious themes however I do not want to make it too serious, I want to make the tone of the film match the personality of Hector, which is something I believe Marley does.

The most interesting shots are the filler shots which may seem to have no meaning when you first watch the film, however these shots have meaning to the overall message of the film. For example, in Marley, Kevin Macdonald chose to have shots of Saint Ann, the place where Bob Marley grew up in and the people there. The people in the film bring an important message. Personally what I got from these filler shots is that Bob used to live like the people that have been shown in the film. As he is no longer alive, these people are showing what Bob used to do while he lived there. This allows the audience to connect with the film on a personal level, this is something that I wish to explore with my documentary. I wish to capture the people in Handsworth and the area, just to show the audience more of the area and give them some time to think about what has been said. I want to educate the audience but I also want to inspire them through these visually striking visuals.

The documentary will show archive footage which will overlay the sound of Hector’s voice. This unseen footage will add to the excitement and exclusivity of the documentary as it is something that has not been seen before. I plan to have a sit down interview in various different locations and with various different people. One of the location that I believe will be amazing to film in, is Hector’s mum’s house, where it all started. This is the house that his mum carried out her community work in, when she arrived in the country. While filming in this house I will have various different shots of significant props or places that are talked about in Hectors story.

The locations that I plan to use is the Handsworth streets, just to get a feel of the area that this documentary is set in. I am also planning to film in the Handsworth Library as it has been Hector's second home for 31 years. Two of the most important places that I plan to shoot in is, Hectors house and Hectors family home. Hectors family home will be significant in this documentary as this is the place where the community work started. This will be the dominant location in this documentary

In terms of me directing the documentary, I feel that there will be bumps in the road as I am documenting a really strong character with strong opinions, so I feel I will have to overcome my shyness and make the documentary that I want to make.
